Spicing Up the Olympics

By Erik Gunther
Thu, February 23, 2006, 3:00 am PST

While the Winter Olympics play out in tape-delayed fashion, we've got plenty of daylight hours to ponder what might have been. NBC could have decided to show more events live, Johnny Weir's credit card could have been declined, or the IOC could have decided to shake things up and add some winter sports people might actually get into.

Instead of the lame lamé of ice dancing, we could have been treated to the drama of ice fishing. We'd watch in awe as competitors construct "portable ice fishing huts" in their specially designed Nike-branded "ice fishing gear" while baiting their "ice fishing lures." Who's to say watching a guy saw a hole in the ice is any less interesting than watching a couple in matching sequined costumes trip the ice fantastic?

Or how about the 100m snowshoe? We'd take that over the boring biathlon all seven days of the week. Snowshoeing was a demonstration sport in 2002, but we think a speedy return in the form of a winner-takes-all snowshoe sprint is in order. If you're ready to compete at Vancouver 2010, you might want to start boning up on "snowshoe basics" and "snowshoeing history."

Finally, we'd finish off with a high-octane snowmobile race. We all remember James Bond whipping through the pines in The Spy Who Loved Me. Who doesn't want to see that sort of excitement every four years? Environment, shmenvironment. If you were racing bad guys, wouldn't you rather have the thrust of a high-powered snowmobile over the old timey 19th-century push of a bobsled? While searches on "used snowmobiles" or "snowmobile parts" might not get you to the games, we do recommend some practice on the popular "wisconsin snowmobile trails" and "michigan snowmobile trails."

If the IOC is listening, we're here -- let us know what you think. We smell a ratings bonanza in 2010, or perhaps we're just sniffing snowmobile exhaust...

Torino's Top Babe

By Erik Gunther
Fri, February 24, 2006, 5:00 pm PST

This year's hottest Olympian doesn't come from the speed skating track (wherefore art thou, Apolo Ohno?) or the slopes of downhill skiing (sorry, Bode). Torino's hottest search celebrity comes from the rarefied air of the rink, and, surprise, it's not glamour gal Sasha Cohen. Buzz gold medalist Tanith Belbin hails from the ferociously fey sport of ice dancing, and her all-around good looks spurred many a male to sprint to the Search box.

Searches on the 21-year-old hottie are up 345% over the last week, and prove that good looks are powerful enough to actually get a dude to watch ice dancing. We won't say she's the only reason searches on "ice dancing" were up over 3,000% for the week, but...oh, what the heck, we will say Belbin is the reason. Surely, she's to blame for the stunning 50/50 gender split in ice dancing queries.

The newly nationalized American citizen has built up quite a fan base and owes a whopping 87% of her searches to the men. The fact that "tanith belbin photos" and "tanith belbin pics" waltzed up the Buzz chart lead us to believe that guys are dying to see "more" of the silver medalist.

It seems to matter little to her admirers that she was half of the duo who brought home America's first ice dancing medal since 1976. Before she had even stepped off the medal podium, searches on "tanith belbin bio," "tanith belbin video," and "tanith belbin hot" cemented her place on top of the mountains of Torino buzz.

Can Anyone Spare a Lutz?

By Erik Gunther

"Figure skating" landed a triple salchow to end up in our top sports searches, with an increase of 151% over the past week. Queries glided gracefully across the Buzz rink, thanks to the popularity of this past weekend's U.S. Championships (+301%).

Skating without drama would simply be Stars on Ice, and NBC couldn't abide an Olympics without some sequined story lines. This year's theme revolves around Michelle Kwan (+29%), whose past Olympic performances have been less than dazzling. Although a groin injury prevented Kwan from competing in the national championships, she still notched a spot in the final U.S. threesome. Her controversial placement on the Olympic squad means third-place finisher Emily Hughes (+160%) will serve as an alternate in Turin. The Kwan decision overshadowed news of Sasha Cohen's (+348%) first-place finish. In the meantime, second-place skater Kimmie Meissner was up 204% in Search. Queries on the 16-year-old will likely soar once Olympic viewers catch a glimpse of her in action.

Olympics on the Way

Fri, January 06, 2006, 11:00 am PST

The torch hasn't even made its way across Italy, but already the women of the 2006 Winter Olympics are making headlines and generating Buzz.

In figure skating news, five-time world champ Michelle Kwan pulled a groin muscle, causing her to drop out of the U.S. Olympic qualifiers. Ouch! Cross your legs in sympathy. But she's refusing to give up her chance at a Wheaties box. Now that's the kind of spirit that sent her searches up 328%, with guys leading the way in interest.

Meanwhile, Japan's best figure skater can't even participate in the Olympics because she's too young. Spry Mao Asada pulled off a Christmas Day miracle with not one but two triple axels, a first for a female skater in a free program. Her performance earned her a 512% holiday spike from the Search judges, but rules are rules, and the 15-year-old will have to wait four more years for her shot at Olympic glory.

Finally, queries went off the charts for U.S. skeleton medalists Felicia Canfield and Tristan Gale after they accused their coach of getting too touchy-feely. Tim Nardiello has been grounded with pay, and investigations have begun. And we thought this Olympics was rated XX.
