Fantastic Fiction

By Gordon Hurd

What was once confined to the underground of Trekkie fandom  has spilled into every bright-eyed nook and cranny of popular culture. Name any TV show, movie, boy band, or anime star and we can guarantee there's a slew of fan fiction awaiting you. Whether you like it or not.

Copyright holders aren't fans of the oeuvre and franchises are likely worried about rampant dilution of their brands. But cool your heels, Hollywood—we've read some of this stuff. We doubt there'll be any bestsellers or blockbusters rising from the depths of the fan fiction forums.

But, let's not be cruel—fan fiction is a constructive way to express your love for your favorite characters and personalities. Perhaps someday we'll see a surge of Buzz Log fan fiction. We suggest a "Walker Texas Ranger" meets "Star Trek" motif. But, please, keep it clean.

A comment about the "bestsellers / blockbusters": People should be aware that several major authors were "discovered" through fan fiction & Filk (fan related music). So some of the fan fiction is very good. In addition some of it is collected and published. I have even heard that one publisher looked specifically in the ranks of fan fiction for new authors for their series.

I'm relieved to know the Backstreet boys, *NSYNC, Bon Jovi, and Nick Carter are all Fiction.

And here I thought they were keepin it real.

In case anyone besides me is interested, there is fan fiction for "The X-Files" and "Brimstone", the cancelled-too-soon series about a man returned from Hell and tasked by the Devil (John Glover, best Devil ever) to hunt down 100 escaped evil souls to earn his own freedom.

But besides that, IMO L.J. Fogel is *HOT*! I've Googled for a picture of her but haven't been able to find one. Yahoo, if you please, post a picture of Ms. Fogel somewhere so that I may gaze upon her beauty whenever I please.
Thank you

I am not the least bit surprised that Harry Potter is the most searched!

RIDICULOUS
IT SHOWS HOW 'DUMB' PEOPLE ARE THESE DAYS.

Posted by smichiba | Tue, April 03, 2007, 5:28 pm PDT

How 'dumb' people are? Excuse you, but as a fanfiction author, I must give you the finger, fossalto. Many fanfiction authors are English majors (I myself was an English major, turned Biology major), and although there is certainly a plethora of really terrible fanfiction by thirteen year olds, there is a lot of novel-length and movel-quality fanfiction out there. There are plenty of fanfictions which are over 100,000 words, abide by the laws of physics, and, were the characters not copyrighted, would be fantastic books for their original plots and ideas.

So, Yahoo!, I must call you out on this one. Many authors have been discovered through fanfiction (I myself have a fanbase of over ten thousand readers, so you can't tell me that people aren't discovered through fanfiction).

Oh lordamercy, Backstreet Boyz? Um... REAL PEOPLE. THATS CREEPY.
Thanks yahoo for those nightmares.

Right, then. I, too, am not the least bit surprised that Harry Potter has topped this list.

What gets me gobsmacked, however, is that the Backstreet Boys have somehow managed to beat out anything anime-related.

So where is the X Files listing? During the show's run, there were several thousand fics written and posted, over 35,000 stories at the Gossamer Project website alone. And regarding quality, many authors are fist-timers but many others have become professionals as a result of writing fan-fic.

So, fanfiction finally gets respect, eh? Well, I'm glad that it finally did get some respect.

But, as a fan fiction author myself, I really must say. That video that they had. They had no idea what girl/girl relationship is called. It's called 'Yuri' by the way.

But, many of those reading this are calling me a geek and calling me stupid. You see, fanfiction is written by people who plan to practice there writing skills, or people who really just flat out love a show are something. Some people, as smichiba said, have been discovered through fanfiction.

I must say as an author that isn't horrible, but isn't amazing either, it really helps with your writing skills. So, don't call it dumb people. It's really the same thing as people talking about 'how awesome would such and such be if that person and that person got together!'. I'm just saying. It's really stupid why people insult things that they've never tried.
