Freshmen Making the Buzz Grade

When an auto worker goes on strike, the boss doesn't ask, "Care to build an extra car before you go?" If a nurse polishes a picket sign, expectant mothers don't start huffing and pushing to make the deadline. However, when a Hollywood writer prepares to walk away from the negotiating table, script orders pour in from studios.

Scribes going AWOL may explain why seven TV premieres received renewal notices, even though some of their ratings are less than stellar. Yes, "Gossip Girl" and "Bionic Woman" have triumphed so far: Robust buzz (respectively +739% and +245% over the past 30 days) pushed them to the top two spots. The time-traveling "Journeyman" hasn't engendered strong searches, but NBC showed enough confidence to give it a future.

Here at Buzz, we too believe in potential. Given their respectable Search interest, these five shows deserve a pass into their sophomore year. Besides, we like giving writers more work.

Deserving TV Freshmen Making the Buzz
Show More Searches Than... Buzz base Lowdown
1. "Private Practice" (ABC) "Dexter" (HBO) Ladies 13-44. Come on, a "Grey's Anatomy" offshoot had to have a decent life expectancy, and its premiere ratings were impressive.
2. "Pushing Daisies" (ABC) "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" (FOX) Ages 13-54, from coast to coast. Critics are almost afraid to love this dramedy for fear of losing it. Besides, the show gives Broadway stars another TV venue besides "Law and Order."
3. "Moonlight" (CBS) "Boston Legal" (ABC) Urbanites 21-54. The 21st-century answer to Buffy lost its ratings edge against female detectives, but the vampire private eye series still has many fans.
4. "Dirty Sexy Money" (ABC) "Law & Order: SVU" (NBC) NYC, Philly and Dallas lead the soap drama lovers. A Baldwin brother, a star in outpatient treatment, and its randy title should guarantee continued attention.
5. "The Big Bang Theory" (CBS) "20/20" (ABC) Nerddom appeals to guys 21-44. Some reviewers aren't impressed, but a charming cast may save the sitcom.
