The 50 Million Pound Challenge
Searches Soar for the Weight-Loss Effort
It's no secret that Americans are increasingly plump people. The obesity epidemic has struck every ethnic group in the nation. But it's hit African Americans the hardest. A vast majority of black adults in the U.S. are considered overweight.
Dr. Ian Smith has seen enough of these bulging waistlines. In April, the author and "Celebrity Fit Club" medical expert launched The 50 Million Pound Challenge, a weight-loss endeavor targeted at the black community. On November 7, the project logged 1 million pounds lost. Soon after, "The Today Show" took notice. And buzz started to perk up.
This past week, lookups for the pound-shedding effort tipped the scales in Search. Demand for "50 million pound challenge" surged 737%, spiking 1,472% on Sunday alone. Driven primarily by searchers in the South, buzz for the anti-fat effort zipped into the week's top movers.
The days ahead will not be easy for dieters anywhere. But hang in there, calorie counters! A svelte and healthy future lies just around the corner.
