Turn Off the TV? Yeah, Right.
Forget about the eyes—Search is the true window to the soul. We see what folks are interested in, and can also deduce what searchers don't care about. For a classic example of the latter, check out "National Turnoff TV Week."
The movement to get people to turn off their TVs is admirable, but most folks don't seem to care very much. True, searches on "national tv turnoff week" are on the rise, but that's to be expected when you're starting from nothing. Queries are currently hovering around our top 4,200 terms. Not bad, but hardly a performance that's going to bring the broadcasting business to its knees.
Perhaps the absence of overwhelming enthusiasm is due to the big TV shows returning from writers' strike purgatory. Lost, Grey's Anatomy, and Ugly Betty all make their comebacks this week. That triple threat may be more firepower than a grass roots campaign can fend off.
