Still the One: Shania Twain Returns
The Country Music Awards were last night, and people are still talking. But it wasn't a poorly lip-synched performance or slurred acceptance speech that got folks excited. Rather, it was the unexpected return of Canadian country music star Shania Twain.
After four years of flying under the radar, the lovely songstress presented the night's final award — entertainer of the year — to Kenny Chesney. Upon taking the stage, she received a standing ovation, and then hinted that fans can expect to be hearing more from the crooner. Quoteth Ms. Twain: "I hope to be seeing a lot more of you."
Searchers certainly sought out more on Shania. Queries on her name surged 140% to land among our top 1,000 overall terms. Related lookups on "shania twain dress," "shania twain cma 2008," and "where has shania twain been" also posted big gains.
The last query is telling. According to People, Twain's "presence marked the singer's first public appearance since announcing her separation from husband Robert 'Mutt' Lange in May." She's been out of the public eye for sometime, but based on last night's appearance, fans are thrilled to have her back. And for those waiting for an album, sources report that Twain "hasn't put down her guitar since the split. The songs are pouring out of her.”
Man, it feels like a comeback.

Don't Mess with Tim McGraw
Important safety tip: Do not do anything stupid or violent in the presence of Tim McGraw. If you do, there is an excellent chance he will pull you up on to the stage by your belt and shove you into the waiting arms of security.
Such an incident transpired at a recent concert. An audience member apparently struck a woman. Whether on purpose or accidental, we're not sure. What we do know is that Mr. McGraw did not like what he saw. After motioning for security, the leather-vested singer personally yanked the offending fan on to the stage and tossed him over to a collection of burly guards with a look of disdain normally reserved for stepped-in dog feces.
Video of the dustup soon hit the Web and searchers went wild. Lookups for "tim mcgraw" surged 181% and related terms like "tim mcgraw fight" and "tim mcgraw concert" spiked enormously. Newspapers, websites, and blogs picked up on the story and recapped it blow-by-blow. People magazine notes that "the man and McGraw seemed ready to get into a full-fledged fracas, with McGraw cocking his fist back as if to throw a punch." iVillage explains that after the ruckus, Tim "went right on singing." A consummate gentleman and a true professional—no wonder wife Faith Hill wants him all to herself.

Predicting Country's Winners
Every artist needs a reward. Thespians and film stars emote for Tonys and Oscars. Musicians of all kinds get down for their Grammys. But only the folks who know how to honkytonk can win a CMA award.
Bestowed by the Country Music Association, the CMA awards have inspired the likes of Loretta Lynn, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Dixie Chicks, and Shania Twain to croon their wigs off for the ultimate title: Entertainer of the Year. Now in its 41st outing, the CMA (+70%) ceremony commands more than a yodel in Yahoo! Search.
In a similarly hallowed tradition of awards-show trainspotting, we thought we'd see if we can predict—if buzz was a banjo—who will be bringing home the top awards Wednesday night.
Top 20 Country Artists in the Buzz
Buzz Picks for the Top 3 Awards
- Entertainer of the Year: Rascal Flatts
- Male Vocalist of the Year: Kenny Chesney
- Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood
Given Carrie Underwood's prominence on the list of artists, we think there may be something to the notion that the women of country music got shut-out. Even the fans felt Ms. Underwood and a selection of other females should have been in the running for the genre's most prestigious award.

Sorry Girls, Tim McGraw Is Taken
Last Saturday night, country singer Faith Hill made it clear to an arena of fans that her man's private parts were exactly that—private. Hill and her husband, fellow crooner Tim McGraw, were performing at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana when an overzealous admirer grabbed at McGraw's nether region.
As caught on cell phone camera by a blessedly quick witted spectator, Faith Hill wasn't going to let this one go. The Mississippi girl leaned over, pointed her finger at the culprit, and let loose with a tongue-lashing. Lecture over, she flounced off down the stage.
Within a country minute, the video was up on the Web and interested parties the world over were hot on its trail. Queries for the singers and the concert flooded the Search box. Demand surged for "tim mcgraw news," "faith hill video," and "youtube faith hill."
After then, the lookups got specific. Very, very specific. Among the terms parading in full view of the Search box were Tim McGraw groped, grabbed, gets grabbed, gets groped, crotch, crotch grab, and balls. Ahem.
However, it was Mrs. McGraw's tirade that kicked up the most response online. Searchers boosted "faith hill yells at fan," sought out "angry faith hill," tracked down "faith hill berates fan," and—our favorite—gave a huge boost to "faith hill balls." Lesson to the ladies: Hands off.
