Tattle Tattoo Tales

By Vera H-C Chan

Are tattoos private?

The obvious answer is: Depends on where you ink them. In-your-face skin art tends to be on one's face, neck, or arms. Fashionable marks show up on the ankle, and peekaboo tats get lower-back placement. Anywhere else, well, only bikini season can tell.

But with so many celebrities baring their latest ink art to anyone who'll ogle, tattoos don't seem like a hidden message ... unless you're Brad Pitt, abashed by an inquisitive Oprah Winfrey fan. His refusal to answer what tattoos he had where during an "Oprah" episode has inadvertently launched a Search probe for "brad pitt tattoos."

Even though the show aired Nov. 19, people are still trying to uncover his alleged skin modifications of "otzi the iceman" and a quote from the late journalist Daniel Pearl, who inspired the movie "A Mighty Heart," starring Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie.

So far, no mainstream source verifies the Pearl quote, but reports of Pitt's tattoo of 5,000-year-old mummy Otzi, who bore at least 57 tattoos, are more than a year old (and had inspired comedian Stephen Colbert to accuse Pitt of being involved in Otzi's demise). The latest Web reaction to Pitt's bashfulness about baring his "personal and special" tattoos has been either flabbergasted or charmed (as well as the usual "who cares"). With more people getting skin modification these days and reality shows on the whole business, tats have sort of lost the exotic tribalism or counter-cultural edge of days past.

Plus, of course, Jolie is notorious for using her body as a canvas, as searchers knew back in 2006. In fact, she still ranks among the top 5 most-searched celebrities inked in the past 7 days. (Oh, Pitt would be no. 6.)

The Buzz Week in Review

By Vera H-C Chan
Fri, September 19, 2008, 3:21 pm PDT

Lots of other pressing news piled up this week in the Buzz. Take a moment to cross out some must-reads and catch up on the afterlife, an A-list donation to save gay marriage, and how a 12-year-old took one small step toward saving the world.

Figure Out the Afterlife: Check.
Time magazine ventures to ask how researchers at the aptly named Human Consciousness Project will study "out-of-body" experiences. The study, even more aptly named project AWARE (AWAreness during REscuscitation), will have scientists interviewing approximately 1,500 heart-attack survivors about their experiences during the time they were dead.

Donated $100K to Gay Marriage: Check
Brad PittLEGO figure, blogger, and humanitarian. After he and Angelina Jolie gave $2 million to an Ethiopian health center, the actor kicked over $100,000 to the campaign against Proposition 8, which seeks to overturn same-sex marriages in California. The cash chunk prompted the New York Observer to recall Pitt's conditions for his own wedded bliss.

Solve Energy Crisis Before Puberty: Check.
Buzz readers felt a little bit proud and inadequate at the same time after finding out how 12-year-old William Yuan refined a superduper solar cell. The Oregonian boy genius received a Davidson Fellow Award worth 25 grand for his research, entitled "A Highly-efficient, 3-Dimensional Nanotube Solar Cell for Visible and UV Light." (In case anyone's worried he might be bullied for his brains, Yuan has a youth black belt in tae kwon do.) Feel inspired, or green with envy? Either might motivate you to to try Treehugger's DIY tips on homemade solar panels from eBay damaged goods.

Also buzzing this week ...
 • By sending junior out of the kitchen, could you be encouraging fussy eating habits? The New York Times points out six parental food mistakes.
 • Shades of Hoovervilles: The Associated Press reports the rise of homeless encampments, or "tent cities," across the U.S.
 • "Babar the Elephant" ... imperialist propaganda? A New Yorker report on a Babar books exhibit gives a sweet family history of Babar's creators, and addresses pesky leftists who see the stories of the four-legged mammal as an "allegory of French colonization."

Buzz Multiplex: The Women Burn

By Vera H-C Chan
Fri, September 12, 2008, 9:57 am PDT

Three tepid openings made for a five-year box-office low last weekend, but the All-Stars have returned. Will the Coen Brothers set the Buzz Multiplex afire with criminal quirk? Can Tyler Perry bring out the faithful? Or will Meg Ryan and her all-female posse show that 2008 is truly the year of the woman... at least on the big screen?

1. "The Women" (PG-13). Nearly 70 years separates the original 1939 vehicle and this remake, yet an all-female cast still seems bold in 21st-century Hollywood. While the comedy doesn't pull in superhero numbers, it is among the top 5,000 searches this week buoyed by a 82% female majority. Lead Meg Ryan reprises the Norma Shearer role as a happily married, successful woman ... until she finds out her husband may have a distraction in the form of Eva Mendes (taking the role played by, oh yes, Joan Crawford). Mendes has more than her fair share of Web interest, but Ryan as well as Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Debra Messing, Candice Bergen, and Cloris Leachman are getting a nice online embrace, as well.

2. "Burn After Reading" (R). Brad Pitt's joy in doing a Coen Brothers project dampened a bit after finding his tailored character was an idjit, but a CB movie is still a CB movie. "Burn," with only slightly fewer searches than "The Women," actually has wider geographic appeal. The comedy pairs Pitt with "Fargo" favorite Frances McDormand as dumb-jock fitness trainers blackmailing former CIA analyst John Malkovich. George Clooney pulls in some Search love as a philanderer noodling with Tilda Swinton as the analyst's wife. This is the kind of film that people actually seek out reviews for, and so far the New York Observer critic (admittedly only favoring two CB movies) calls it "willfully awful," whereas Rolling Stone calls the post-"No Country" release as "wildly funny, but just as wildly uneven." NYT identifies the problem as a heartlessly comic landscape, in which Pitt proves one of the "saving graces."

3. "Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys" (PG-13). Another auteur project, the melodrama with the horror-film title looks at the respective families of best pals, played by Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard. The buzz, though, circulates around Sanaa Lathan, with Cole Hauser providing the male eye candy. "Family" may be the first Perry effort to feature a white lead, but the real story—as TimeOut New York reveals—is his continued emphasis on strong women. The strategy works, as Web interest breaks down along the same gender lines as "The Women."

Others sought out on the Buzz Marquee... "Righteous Kill" (R) generates Search sparks with nuclear powerhouses Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino, but bad reviews could do them in, even with 50 Cent in the mix... The coming-of-age tale of an Arab-American teen has launched search buzz up 665% Limited release for "Towelhead" ... Sundance prize-winner documentary "Flow" takes its investigation about the nation's water supplies only to New York and Los Angeles this week, but its buzz is strong.

Quentin Hearts Brad

By Mike Krumboltz
Wed, July 09, 2008, 3:31 pm PDT

When Quentin Tarantino announces that he's making a movie, people listen. The auteur behind "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill" recently revealed that he has not only finished the script for his next film ("Inglorious Bastards"), he's already thinking about casting.

According to several articles in the Buzz, Mr. Tarantino would love Brad Pitt for the lead in the World War II film. Alas, there may be a few snags with that plan. First, Mr. Pitt will probably have his hands full with the impending birth of his twins. And second, according to New York Magazine, Angelina Jolie's hunky hubby is already signed on to do another film. That could mean he won't be available for a loooong time.

Scheduling conflicts or not, searches on the flick are already on the rise and several posts have garned the attention of readers. A blog from PhillyBurbs notes that Mr. Tarantino would like to start shooting in October and have the film premiere at Cannes in May, 2009. If that's really the case, QT should start filming soon... with or without Brad Pitt.

Brad and Leo: Face Off!

By Vera HC Chan
Mon, January 29, 2007, 2:03 am PST

Most of the time, the Oscars noms make sense. But this year we were wondering—did Brad Pitt get the shaft? His movie "Babel" received Best Picture consideration (not to mention a Buzz lead), but bupkus for the leading man.

His omission didn't go by unnoticed by pundits or the people—searches on Brad ratcheted up 306% after the awards were announced. Then again, he might've spurred interest for admitting to the sin of envy over best actor nominee Leonardo DiCaprio and his macho roles, the kind Pitt used to do back in the day.

Does the green monster need to rear its mug between these two golden boys? Based on searches, perhaps Brad can afford to be the munificent elder statesman.

Desperately Seeking Shiloh

By Gordon Hurd
Fri, June 09, 2006, 2:58 am PDT

In a move so subtle and understated that it could only concern celebrity spawn, two gossip glossies bid on the rights to publish photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's new baby. People Magazine pitched $4 million, and Hello! in the U.K. kicked in $3.5 million for the snapshots of Brad, Angelina, and li'l Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt all draped in the soft white light of the super-famous. Moments of parental bliss are priceless indeed, and congrats are certainly due the proud parents. But are baby pictures worth up to $10 million?

Search went baby-crazy with looky-loos desperate to take a peek at Shiloh, so maybe the multimillion-dollar price tag isn't so ridiculous after all. Queries for "shiloh novel [sic] jolie pitt pictures" topped the Search heap, rising a steep 960%. Other variations of searches seeking Shiloh include "jolie-pitt baby picture" (+764%), "shiloh nouvel jolie-pitt pictures" (+666%), "shiloh pitt pictures" (+655%), "brangelina baby pictures" (+416%), and "angelina's baby" (+194%).

More interesting (to us, at least) was the related increase in searches for gossip blogs, including Gawker (+945%), Defamer (+603%), Oh No They Didn't (+709%), Pink Is the New Blog (+30%), and Perezhilton.com (+31%), all of which posted leaked photos. We understand most or all of these essential information resources received cease-and-desist letters from People's lawyers, seeking to protect their exclusive.
