Tattle Tattoo Tales
Are tattoos private?
The obvious answer is: Depends on where you ink them. In-your-face skin art tends to be on one's face, neck, or arms. Fashionable marks show up on the ankle, and peekaboo tats get lower-back placement. Anywhere else, well, only bikini season can tell.
But with so many celebrities baring their latest ink art to anyone who'll ogle, tattoos don't seem like a hidden message ... unless you're Brad Pitt, abashed by an inquisitive Oprah Winfrey fan. His refusal to answer what tattoos he had where during an "Oprah" episode has inadvertently launched a Search probe for "brad pitt tattoos."
Even though the show aired Nov. 19, people are still trying to uncover his alleged skin modifications of "otzi the iceman" and a quote from the late journalist Daniel Pearl, who inspired the movie "A Mighty Heart," starring Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie.
So far, no mainstream source verifies the Pearl quote, but reports of Pitt's tattoo of 5,000-year-old mummy Otzi, who bore at least 57 tattoos, are more than a year old (and had inspired comedian Stephen Colbert to accuse Pitt of being involved in Otzi's demise). The latest Web reaction to Pitt's bashfulness about baring his "personal and special" tattoos has been either flabbergasted or charmed (as well as the usual "who cares"). With more people getting skin modification these days and reality shows on the whole business, tats have sort of lost the exotic tribalism or counter-cultural edge of days past.
Plus, of course, Jolie is notorious for using her body as a canvas, as searchers knew back in 2006. In fact, she still ranks among the top 5 most-searched celebrities inked in the past 7 days. (Oh, Pitt would be no. 6.)

From Our "Sad but True" File...
Stephen Baldwin isn't on Hollywood's A-list. In fact, we'd say he's one step away from being a seat-filler on Oscar night. Still, his last name still means something in Tinseltown, so when word hit that the born-again Baldwin got a Miley Cyrus tattoo, folks had to know more.
As it turns out, the rumors are true. Sort of. Baldwin, on a dare from Ms. Cyrus, had "HM" (for "Hannah Montana") tattooed on his arm. Apparently, nobody ever gave Steve the "if your friends dared you to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you" talk.
Not surprisingly, Mr. Baldwin is now trying to guilt-trip Ms. Cyrus into letting him act on her show as payback for decorating his skin with her alter-ego's initials. Sources indicate that Miley will indeed let Mr. Baldwin on the set. Maybe as a stand-in...

Good Ink: Top Tattoo Searches
Tattoos have long been a way to prove endless love. But sometimes this flush of inky emotion can end in disaster when romance cools. Johnny Depp's ill-advised "Winona Forever" tat, an homage to his then-relationship to Winona Ryder, comes to mind. When the couple split, so did the tattoo, to "Wino Forever."
But we're not here to judge. After all, tattoo art is big in Buzz. Below are the top searches for the pretty-much permanent body decoration. May we remind you, think before you ink.

Lower Back Tattoo Trouble?
"A 2006 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that nearly one-quarter of Americans ages 18 to 50 are tattooed. Among them, nearly 20% of the women have tattoos on their lower back, researchers reported."— Rachel Zimmerman, "Why Some Expectant Moms Are Worried About Tattoos," Wall Street Journal, September 18, 2007
We stumbled across Gawker and its spirited stable of commenters having a field day with this WSJ item about whether women should be worried about receiving an epidural through a lower back tattoo. Given the popularity of the so-called "tramp stamp," this question is of utmost national importance. Searches on "tattoo removal" eked out a 5% gain this week—not that there's any correlation. Yet!
In terms of tattoo Buzz, the lower back still leads the parade of body parts looking for body art. Queries on "lower back tattoos" are more than double those of "wrist tattoos." Related searches on "pictures of lower back tattoos," "lower back tattoo designs," and "cute lower back tattoos" are all peeking out over the waistband of Buzz.
Additionally, the story sparked interest in deadening the pain of childbirth. Searches on "epidural" jumped 48% over the past seven days. We also saw a smattering of searches on "epidural tattoo" and "epidural injection."
The study cited in the article doesn't have enough evidence to say definitively whether or not a lower back tattoo is dangerous when combined with an epidural. It's just one more thing to consider as you search on "tramp stamp pics."
Permanently Yours...
Tattoos are forever. Thankfully, we don't imagine many folks get inked up on a whim. They do their homework in Search.
Good thing, 'cause there are a lot of questions to consider. Should you get it on your shoulder? Or, should you be like 50% of the women in Los Angeles, and decorate your lower back? What about the neck? That won't hurt, will it?
In the interest of helping you decide where to get your very own "Bad Boy Club" tattoo, we tracked down the most-searched body places for body art. Don't forget the aloe.

Clash of the TV Tattoo Titans
An ink-stained smackdown is underway on TLC. New tattoo-themed show "L.A. Ink" has overtaken old standby "Miami Ink" in searches over the last week. The west coast spinoff of the Miami-based cable hit has put up big numbers in Buzz before it's even hit the air. Most of the interest is built in, thanks to the ringleader of the L.A. bunch—popular tattoo artist (and former Miami Ink star) Kat Von D.
The tempestuous and talented Ms. Von D supposedly left Miami after a feud with owner Ami James. Her tinseltown-based show may prove that she's the true star of tattoo TV. She generated a ton of Search heat during season 2 of Miami Ink, and her fans are all set to follow her as she inks Hollywood scenesters and celebs...
