- Critics' Choice Awards . (+741%). Sean Penn, Anne Hathaway, and Meryl Streep are all winners.
- Oakland riot (+329%). Searches on the California city spiked on news that residents smashed store windows and burned cars. The furor was sparked by a transit officer who killed an unarmed man in a subway station on New Year's Eve. The mayor appealed for calm as the investigation continues.
- Macy's stores (+323%). Surprised look-ups on the department store on word that declining sales spurred Macy's to shutter 11 of its poorest performing stores.
