Prom Queen for a Day: The Glass Slipper Project
High school students who want to pretty up for prom face an ugly reality: This year many parents can't pony up the hundreds of dollars required for the event. For those who want to attend with all the trappings minus the bank account, a fairy godmother awaits.
The Glass Slipper Project outfits low-income girls with a dress, shoes, even a purse and accessories—everything except a date. The organization holds "boutique days" for students to pick out donated dream dresses. Volunteers who act as personal shoppers help transform teens into prom queens. Searches have already surged on "the glass slipper project," and lookups for all things prom are off the charts. The organization, based in Chicago, has spawned some copycats across the country and even Canada.
Where there's a will to go to prom, there's a way-cool gown waiting.
