Tiller murder suspect speaks, Powerball winner, French Open: Buzz Weekend Recap
This weekend, the George Tiller murder suspect speaks, a winner from Winner cashes in big in Powerball, and Roger Federer breaks his French Open jinx and dodges a spectator on the court to boot. Just a few of the most popular stories in Yahoo! Buzz...
Tiller murder suspect threatens, complains
Scott Roeder, the 51-year-old man charged with murdering late-term abortion doctor George Tiller, had a lot to say in a phone call to the AP on Sunday, including "I know there are many other similar events planned around the country as long as abortion remains legal." The Justice Department said that threat was being taken seriously. Roeder also did a lot of complaining, calling the conditions of his incarceration "deplorable." His cell was so cold, he said, that he "started having a bad cough. I thought I was going to have pneumonia." Roeder also said he'd been denied phone privileges and needed his sleep apnea machine. The one thing he didn't say was that he'd shot Tiller, offering a no comment to a question about his involvement.
Winner from Winner cashes in big
Todd County in rural South Dakota is one of the poorest in the nation, but its tax base is about to increase. That's because 23-year-old Neal Wanless, not to be confused with winless, won a $232 million Powerball jackpot in the May 27 drawing, one of the largest undivided payouts in a United States lottery. And where did he buy his ticket? In a town called Winner. Wanless opted for a one-time lump sum of $118 million, or $88.5 million after taxes. Wanless works on his family's ranch. Or at least he did.
Federer finally conquers France
This year's French Open offered many storylines, including an unserene Serena Williams, a teenage women's player making sounds like a whooping crane, Svetlana Kuznetsova beating top-ranked Dinara Safina in the finals, and of course the ongoing soap opera of the Rafael Nadal-Roger Federer rivalry. Nadal's defeat
at the hands of 23rd seed Robin Soderling opened the door for Federer, who had lost three straight finals at Roland Garros stadium to the undisputed king of the French Open. And Federer did not disappoint, beating Soderling in straight sets to become the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam and tying Pete Sampras’ record of 14 major
singles titles. He also had to shake off a spectator who jumped onto the court and tried to put a hat on his head. "At least he's got his clothes on," said TV commentator John McEnroe of the interloper.
