Miss California, Stephen Colbert, and the new iPhone: Buzz Week in Review
Oh, the drama! A beauty queen was given the boot, and a talk show host took one for the team. A new iPhone got techies drooling, and a famous rocker fought some backstage scenery (and lost). Take a look back at those stories and more with the Buzz Week in Review.
Carrie Prejean: Fired but not forgotten
Controversial beauty queen Carrie Prejean was fired as Miss California by Donald Trump. The news sent searchers into a barely controlled tizzy. Queries on "carrie prejean fired," "trump fires carrie prejean," and "carrie prejean canned" (ouch!) all soared in Search. And, of course, the buzz didn't stop there. Immediately, folks began speculating on why the outspoken Prejean was let go. According to pageant officials, it had to do with Prejean's refusal to live up to her contract. Not surprisingly, Prejean says otherwise. During a hilariously intense interview with Matt Lauer, she stated that it had much more to do with her stance on gay marriage. Either way, she's not happy, and, this being America, a lawsuit could be forthcoming.
A new, more aerodynamic Stephen Colbert
There are patriots, guys like George Washington and Superman. And then there is Stephen Colbert. Instead of mocking the news, the talk show host became the news when he entertained American troops in Iraq. Among the many bits that got folks buzzing: Colbert having his head shaved by Gen. Ray Odierno. The order to rid Mr. Colbert of his lovely locks came from none other than President Obama. The very funny and buzzy moment inspired lookups on "colbert in iraq," "stephen colbert shaved head," and "obama on colbert." We also noticed a smattering of searches on "stephen colbert camouflage suit." Bad news for folks looking to pick one up: It was custom made by Brooks Brothers.
New iPhone makes old iPhone look like garbage
We knew this day was coming. Anyone who owns an iPhone 3G or, heaven help you, an original iPhone, was gripped by intense fears of inadequacy this week when Apple announced the newest version — the "iPhone 3G S." According to Gamers.com, the "S" stands for speed, but quicker Web browsing wasn't the feature that peaked fan interest. The inclusion of a video player led to big lookups on "iphone video camera specs." The phone is set to hit stores in a few weeks, at which point owners of older models will have to either learn to live with their embarrassingly inferior gadgets or pay a hefty upgrade fee.
Also buzzing this week...
• Rocker Bret Michaels broke his nose backstage at the Tony Awards. His biggest regret: Not getting to see Anne Hathaway at the after parties.
• Zack Morris showed up on "The Jimmy Fallon Show." Fortunately, Zach left Screech at home.
• An Israeli woman threw away her mother's old mattress that was literally stuffed with $1 million cash. Say, which way to the dump?
