What it means to be a man depends (a lot) on who you ask. To some, it means being a good husband and father. To others, it might have something to do with the ability to drink copious amounts of mind-numbing liquids and still stand (The Buzz disagrees with this theory). And to two guys from Indiana, being a man isn't just one or two traits -- its an attitude... an attitude that is best shown off on National Man Day.
That's right — today is one of the world's great unsung holidays. Started by a couple of dudes from the Hoosier State, NMD is all about macho activities. Think of it as the Chuck Norris of holidays. And while it isn't in danger of garnering a Christmas or Halloween-like following (yet), it is starting to flex its pecs in Search. Lookups on "national man day" are up 312%. A look at the Facebook membership page reveals thousands of supporters. Not too shabby.
Blogs have chimed in with their thoughts on the hairy-chested holiday. The Huffington Post explains that the day's organizers, brothers Joel and Aaron Longanecker, "urge participants to take part in "manly" activities such as football, hunting or watching Rocky movies." When told their proposed day of machismo fell on the same day as "Sneak a Kiss Day," the brothers responded that "real men don't 'sneak' kisses."
We have a feeling that Mickey Spillaine, Clint Eastwood, and Randy 'Macho Man' Savage would agree.
