Buzz Multiplex: Measure of a Man As a Woman
You'd be forgiven if you thought Tyler Perry was a winter holiday. Every year, with clockwork regularity, a Perry movie draws in millions of box office dollars. The Guardian, just a pond-leap from Hollywood, dubbed him "Lionsgate's Most Valuable Player." Mr. Perry should prove he's the studio moneymaker again with "Madea Goes to Jail," another stage-to-film project.
For those who haven't caught up with the Kingdom of Perry (and missed Buzz reports on him in 2007 and in March and September of 2008), peruse these five (plus) factoids...
- Perry of course plays larger-than-life matriarch Mabel "Madea" Simmons (and she's large partly because Perry's 6-foot-5). The character blends his mom Maxine's wisdom and aunty Mayola's persona and gun. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution points out that Madea's a typical Southern endearment for grandmoms, short for "Mother Dear.")
- He has three successful projects out in three different mediums: television ("House of Payne"), film ("Madea Goes to Jail," tracking in the top 5,000 searches on Yahoo! this week), and stage ("The Marriage Counselor"). Hollywood Reporter calls him "one of the biggest theater draws in the country." Oh, his book—still on sale.
- Once a wristcutter to get away from his abusive father, Perry ultimately turned to religion as a salve.
- The former bill collector and homeless man could probably pay off a bunch of bills, after grossing $130 million in 2007, although he's having billing tiffs with contractors over his new house and Tyler Perry Studios, which opened in October.
- Besides email communications, Perry pays attention to his message board to see how much his audiences will let him get away with.
How does Perry measure up as a woman, by the way? Entertainment Weekly's slideshow "Cross-dressed to Kill" shows how tough it can be to be a man in a woman's world.

The Buzz Weekend Wrap
Dollar-poor and gas-gouged, most Americans may have opted to stay home for the Memorial Day weekend. As many paid homage to the day's meaning (and revisited its history thanks to Mental Floss magazine), the Buzz found time to take to the races, peruse working vacation photos from Mars, and bid farewell to a man who shaped cinema storytelling history.
Phoenix Descending
The Phoenix Mars Lander, leaving before the gas price hikes, traveled 10 months and 422 million miles to get to Mars. Alas, it's a biz trip for Phoenix, which joins the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers to dig around and see if the fourth planet had once been habitable (at least, according to Earthly standards). Yahoo! News posted Red Planet photos, and HowStuffWorks took the opportunity to look at the mechanics of NASA itself. Appreciate the Phoenix's sacrifice: The Martian winter will frost her jets and ground her on the Red Planet forever.
Indy Racing
The San Antonio Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers in game three of the NBA Western Conference finals, the Detroit Red Wings vanquished the Pittsburgh Penguins during the Stanley Cup's much-watched opener, and some old dogs did new tricks in UFC 84. Still, in the Memorial Day weekend sporting arena, the Indianapolis 500 scored the Buzz knockout—and all the car crashes. Scott "Iceman" Dixon didn't just win his first Indy race: He also brought home a record purse. Meanwhile, NPR did a blow-by-blow of Danica Patrick's own near ultimate fight with the Aussie who clipped her car—which couldn't make her more popular than she already is. Or could it...
Pollack Passing
Silence your ringtones out of respect. Director/producer Sydney Pollack may not have been a household name, but his populist vision dominated cinema throughout the '70s and '80s. The 73-year-old man of Hollywood died of cancer Monday, leaving behind a slew of Oscar-nominated works, including "Out of Africa," "Tootsie," and "The Way We Were." An erstwhile actor, Pollack was last seen as George Clooney's boss in "Michael Clayton."
•Can Oprah Winfrey blame the writer's strike? The New York Times started adding—or subtracting—the numbers, and found that her mighty empire has been steadily declining in audience and readers. While her political endorsements may have cost her, the drop started three years ago.
•The films, eh. But the fashion, scrumptious. Buyers and critics in search of break-out flicks at the 61st Cannes Film Festival had been largely unimpressed, except by French movie "Entre les Murs" and American actress Angelina Jolie. The former won the top prize, while the latter captivated spectators and kicks off FabSugar's fashion recap.
•As airlines have cut back serving meals, a Harvard Medical School study showed that fasting is the best way to avoid jetlag. Look for a study next year about how carrying less luggage makes you speak foreign languages better.

The Grindhouse Directors Face Off
Buzz on "Grindhouse" has reached a frenzied pitch. Searches on the double-feature flick have jumped 70% over the past week and fans are ready to buy tickets for this violent ode to '70s schlock.
We've covered the Buzz on the women of "Grindhouse," but what about the men responsible for bringing the vision to life? Directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are revered for their work, and we're sure fanboys of the two moviemakers won't be disappointed. However, we wanted to see what would happen if we pitted the two BFFs against one another in Buzz. Here's how our director faceoff played out...
| The auteurs of "Grindhouse" | |||
| Quentin Tarantino | Robert Rodriguez | Buzz meter says... | |
| Seminal Work | "Reservoir Dogs" | "El Mariachi" | Quentin's debut blasts "Mariachi" in search by factor of four. |
| Biggest Grosser | "Pulp Fiction" | "Spy Kids" | "Pulp" still resonates throughout pop culture. Tarantino's masterwork pulls in seven times as many searches. Edge to Quentin. |
| Franchise Fare | Kill Bill 1 and 2 | Spy Kids 1, 2, and 3 | The blood-splattered fare of "Bill" outdraws the kid-friendly spies by a four to one margin. Quentin all the way. |
| Casting Crutch | Uma Thurman | Antonio Banderas | Uma doubles up Antonio in Search, plus she's hotter. Nod to QT on this one. |
| Cred Buster | Guest judge on "American Idol" | Casting Tarantino as an actor in "From Dusk Till Dawn" | While "Idol" is the buzziest topic out there, Tarantino's appearance in season 3 was sweaty and odd. Edge to Rodriguez. |
| Top Related Search | Quentin Tarantino Movies | Robert Rodriguez Divorce | Tarantino's oeuvre is beloved. Rodriguez has a love hangover. Go with Quentin on this one. |
| "Grindhouse" Flick | "Death Proof" | "Planet Terror" | Way too close to call. Tarantino's half notched about 70 more searches over the past week, a tiny margin in the world of Buzz. Call it a draw. |
| Oddball Search | Quentin Tarantino Foot Fetish | Robert Rodriguez Dating Rose McGowan | We're putting our foot down and going with Rodriguez on this one. |

Buzz Goes to the Movies
Unlike rail-thin starlets, directors like Kevin Smith and M. Night Shyamalan don't grow on trees. True, their recent films ("Jersey Girl" and "The Village") fell short at the box office, but they remain two of Hollywood's most recognized names.
Now the filmmakers have two very different films opening on the same day—"Clerks II" and "Lady in the Water." While Smith's is about slackers and Shyamalan's concerns a water nymph (or something), searches show the two auteurs have quite a lot in common.

Woody Allen, Back in Buzz
Umm. Does anyone else remember Curse of the Jade Scorpion?
But interviews with Woody Allen are rare enough that the magazine's tell-some article bumped the bespectacled director, his wife Soon-Yi Previn, and his ex-partner Mia Farrow (who is also Soon-Yi's adoptive mother -- remember this story?) into the bright glare of Buzz's top movers. Even searches on Soon-Yi's adoptive father, Andre Previn, sat up, blinking, in the light.
Yes, Woody Allen's movies and quotes are popular at the Search box. But ever since the sordid tale of man, woman, and woman's adopted daughter divided Manhattan into Mia fans or Woody defenders -- and, just maybe, since the day the films' ticket sales slumped -- searches on Woody Allen's biography far outweigh interest in his work. From his relationship with Soon-Yi to his children, his marriage, his image, his jazz-playing, and his "scandal," the off-screen details draw more fans to the Web than the yearly films.
Yet for Annie Hall addicts, hope springs eternal. Reviewers like Match Point, Allen's upcoming film, and Buzz is humming. Searches on "woody allen new movie" and "match point woody allen" recently stirred. And even "woody allen scarlett" bounded upward -- boosting Match Point star Scarlett Johansson into the no-last-name-necessary breed of starlet. Perhaps the new film will be just like Manhattan and signal a return to the glory days. Or not. In the meantime, is Mia giving interviews?
