Sex and the Sopranos

By Mike Krumboltz
Fri, July 11, 2008, 12:54 pm PDT

HBO, giddy over the success of its "Sex and the City: The Movie," may be going back for another dose of Carrie and company. But, wait, that's not all! There are also rumors "The Sopranos" might be getting "made" for the big screen. Bada bing, indeed!

We'd love to tell you HBO is planning a cross-over flick where characters from the two iconic shows meet up ("Samantha, meet Paulie Walnuts..."), but the alleged plans actually involve two separate movies. And, please note, we said "alleged." These are just rumors, albeit juicy ones that have launched a slew of blog postings and articles in the Buzz.

Access Hollywood reports that HBO execs have expressed public interest in doing another “Sex and The City” movie as well as a “Sopranos” flick. Meanwhile, Huffington Post notes that the fate of a Sopranos film would ultimately rest with the show's creator, David Chase. And, according to this video from Fox News, Mr. Chase ain't that interested. On a brighter note, the New York Post writes that there is currently "a lot of energy" about another "Sex" movie. A return to glittery Manhattan appears far more likely than another ticket to seedy Jersey.

For what it's worth, searches on both shows are still high, despite their being off the air. And, remember its called "show business" for a reason. If producers throw enough money on the table, we wouldn't be surprised if Tony came out of retirement for one more hit.

Buzz Multiplex: Sex Drive

By Vera H-C Chan
Fri, May 30, 2008, 9:16 am PDT

It's double entendre week at the Buzz Multiplex. "Sex" pairs with "Strangers" on the marquee, and documentary "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," about America's roid rage, sparks mild interest. "The Strangers" follows the usual pattern of horror films with a strong showing in Search, partly because of its vague "based on a true story" claims. Crime fans are researching possible cinematic inspirations like the "keddie cabin murders" and the Manson murders and Barbara Hoyt.

The weekend, though, is all about "Sex." Is this really the unadulterated chick flick of the year? Unless those 35% of males searching for "sex and the city" are just looking up the title for the articles, the appeal looks to go beyond broads. (For men who want to articulate how much they don't want to see the Manhattan femmes, New York Magazine obliges with reader suggestions ranging from a preference for a "light flick on the nose" to being "punched in the stomach by the guy that killed Houdini.")

Still, "Sex" ranks as the top female bonding film of the year, especially among ladies 13-44. Radar Online may feel the need to go on the defensive about "Sex" appeal, but searchers have been unashamedly clamoring to find "spoilers," learn "trivia," catch up on "episodes" and "cast," buy "tickets," and read "reviews."

In response, EW.com provides an episode guide, and Yumsugar probes the foursome's influence on non-carnal appetites then and now. The Miami Herald delves into the hysteria with a cast interview that includes Chris Noth while Philly.com exposes the male handiwork behind the "SATC" mythology.

Associated Press caught up readers with the foursome and the actresses. As for online searches, surprisingly, while the primary protagonist "carrie bradshaw" is the clear character favorite, Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't lead the cast queries unless one lumps in searches for her Bitten clothing line.

More surprisingly, while the females make up the majority of movie searches, the guys comprise most of the actresses' online following. Muse over this paradox while checking out most popular "SATC" women... and their men.

  1. Kristin Davis (Charlotte York)
  2. Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw)
  3. Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones)
  4. Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes)
  1. Chris Noth (Mr. Big)
  2. Jason Lewis (Smith Jerrod)
  3. Evan Handler (Harry Goldenblatt)
  4. David Eigenberg (Steve Brady)

John Adams, American Superstar?

By Molly McCall
Tue, March 18, 2008, 12:12 pm PDT

HBO's latest miniseries—the seven-part "John Adams," starring Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney—kicked off with a two-episode opener on Sunday night. We don't know yet how the ratings panned out, but the reaction in Search the next morning sounded like a standing ovation.

Lookups of "john adams miniseries" rose an astonishing 1,073%, climbing into our top 35 daily movers. As of Tuesday morning, the query continued to hold sway in the top hourly searches.

The advance buzz was equally impressive. Over the past 7 days, interest in "president john adams" surged nearly 1,300%. We might've credited the bump to middle schoolers desperately seeking homework help, but the bulk of the queries came flowing in from 35 to 64 year olds. Americans interested in American history, who woulda thought?

Besides the man himself, searchers have investigated the Founding Father's family. Queries are up nearly 300% for Abigail Adams, the country's second First Lady and astute adviser to her husband. Demand for cousin Samuel Adams, son John Quincy Adams, and "john adams children" has also spiked.

Though many critics have lauded the cable drama, some reviewers have not been so quick to jump on the celebratory bandwagon. Tim Goodman at The San Francisco Chronicle bemoaned the waste of Giamatti's talents in the role. If the buzz keeps up the way it's going now, though, this may prove a historic role for the actor.

John From Cincinnati... Sinks

By Molly McCall
Thu, August 16, 2007, 2:41 am PDT

On Monday, just one day after "John From Cincinnati" aired its first season finale, HBO pulled the plug on the surf series conceived and co-written by David Milch, previously of "Deadwood."

Reasons floated by bloggers and critics for the show's early death included: The reviews were rotten; the viewership was skimpy; the empty time slot left by "The Sopranos" was too tough to fill; the storyline was too weird.

Well, yeah. The "John" of the series' title was a seeming alien who couldn't take a dump. But was the buzz really so fecal? The answer is: Pretty much.

In a graph of the weekly searches from throughout the show's run, buzz jerks upward when the series starts, lurches again midway through the season, and then jolts for the finale (and news of the cancellation). But otherwise, that line stays pretty stagnant. And everyone knows that's no fun to ride:

However, HBO has offered a salve to Milch fans smarting from the loss of "John" so soon after "Deadwood." According to Variety, the cable channel and the uber-writer already have something else in the works. Some relationships take a licking and keep on ticking.

The Men of Entourage

By Mike Krumboltz
Wed, April 11, 2007, 2:40 am PDT

Amid the current Sopranos-mania, another show from HBO also returned. The premiere of "Entourage" wasn't as hyped as the mob drama's, but no matter. Searches show that Vince, Ari, and the boys still have groupies galore.

Queries on the hit comedy surged 205%, thrusting it into our top 700 searches. Though the premiere technically marked the start of the second half of the third season, queries on "entourage season 4" also spiked. Other searches of note included "entourage quotes," "entourage soundtrack," and "entourage spoilers."

Among other things, "Entourage" is about the friendship between five guys. We decided to test this friendship by ranking the stars by their rank in Search. When it comes to which cast member draws the most buzz, you might be surprised. We sure were...

  1. Jeremy Piven — Ari, the agent.
  2. Adrian Grenier — Vince, the hearthrob.
  3. Kevin Dillon — Johnny Drama, the brother.
  4. Kevin Connolly — Eric, the manager
  5. Jerry Ferrara — Turtle, the chump.
