Big To-'Do: Fantasy Hair Competition

By Claudine Zap
Tue, April 28, 2009, 2:14 pm PDT

Apologies to the petite and the mousy haired: Sometimes bigger really is better. What other proof do you need than the International Fantasy Hair Competition. Walking with head held upright optional.

You can put away your hairspray for now. The teased tresses we're seeing were on stage, not on the street. For one night in New Hampshire, feathers, flowers, chicken wire, and birds topped the noggins of 50 models looking to be a head above the rest. The winner sported a halo of peacock feathers. And lots and lots of hairspray.

The literally hair-raising styles also raised money for a good cause. Proceeds of the competition supported a local food bank. Not to mention the cause of huge hair. View a slide show here.

Hairstyles of the Rich and Famous

By Claudine Zap

Fans of "The Hills" reality show follow the drama of wealthy, glamorous and well-coiffed Lauren Conrad. In the last seven days, the TV star has also found fame on the Web as lookups for "Lauren Conrad hair" spiked over 140%. This is no small praise. Past celebu-heads in Search include Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes, and Posh Spice.

Hairistas are clearly on the hunt for a better 'do — from new looks to remedies for problem heads. Our favorite: Searches on the "bumpit," which promises volume to the limp locked. (Is that Lauren Conrad's secret?)

Here, the top "hair" searches in the past seven days.

2.Short Shag Hairstyles 7.Jessica Alba Hair

Wild and Woolly: A Display of the Best Sports Facial Hair

By Molly McCall
Thu, September 11, 2008, 2:59 pm PDT

Let the models sashay down the catwalks at New York Fashion Week. We prefer this parade of exuberant male facial hair from sports site InGameNow.

See Oakland A's relief pitcher Rollie Fingers show off his daring curly-cue of a 'stache. Glimpse White Sox closer Bobby Jenks and his shock of bright pink chin hair. Gaze in wonder at hockey legend Lanny McDonald and his display of shaggy whiskers.

These guys may specialize in wielding hockey sticks or baseball bats, but they certainly know their way with a razor, too. And many of their efforts have not been forgotten. Besides the popularity of the InGameNow posts, we continue to log queries each week for "oakland a's mustache gang." Now, that's fan respect.

The show continues tomorrow when the "Full Beard Division" takes to the field. The ZZ Toppers will be followed by the beguiling "I Have No Idea How to Classify That Division." Go, teams! And boys, let that facial hair grow!

Mrs. McCain's New 'Do

By Mike Krumboltz
Tue, July 08, 2008, 4:40 pm PDT

The presidential election is like one really big reality show with one really big prize. Every move is analyzed and debated, so it should come as no surprise that Cindy McCain's new hairdo(s) caused a bit of a stir in the Buzz.

The wife of presumptive Republican nominee, Senator John McCain, lowered her locks and cameras took notice. The stately blonde normally keeps her tresses up in a bun, but she showcased not one, but two free-flowing styles this past weekend. In the first, Ms. McCain wore her hair in a casual ponytail. That alone would be news, but wait, there's more. In the second, she let it hang loose in "cascading waves" (not our words).

Of course, reading too much into this may seem silly, but some contend that there is more to the new hairstyles than meets the eye. An article from the New York Daily News explains that the potential First Lady may be becoming more open-minded about her looks. Or, perhaps, as a stylist contends, the new look is a way to get voters to see her not as an "old teacher or a librarian," but as a First Lady. Further proof that when it comes to this reality show, everyone really is watching.

The Cutting Edge

By Andrea Sandke

If you're one of the searchers who has been checking out "hairstyles with bangs," be warned. We've also spotted queries that hint at post-haircut regret, including "how to fix short bangs" and "ways to grow bangs out." Perhaps some of those pleas were follow-ups to earlier searches on the daring "how to cut your own bangs"?

Still, the locks of stars like Reese Witherspoon and Rihanna generate the kind of buzz that could send a girl to the salon. Nicole Richie in particular seems to inspire a desire for "side swept bangs." Even Katie Holmes just jumped on the bangs bandwagon with her new 'do. Other celebs whose past and present bangs help maintain an appetite for "celebrity haircuts with bangs"? Kate Moss, Kate Beckinsale, Liv Tyler, and Heidi Klum.

"Side bangs" currently dominate the bangs search roster, though overall the requests get pretty specific depending on the hair needs and style goals of the user.

  1. Hairstyles with bangs
  2. Side bangs
  3. Side swept bangs
  4. How to cut bangs
  5. Haircuts with bangs
  1. Long hairstyles with bangs
  2. Hair bangs
  3. Side bangs hairstyles
  4. Long hairstyles with short bangs
  5. Hairstyles with straight bangs

You're got your "swoop bangs," your "wispy bangs," your "short choppy bangs," and even your "emo bangs." Some want "bob haircuts with bangs," some are considering "short layered hair with bangs." Hoping to find a style that will flatter your face and your God-given mane? "Face flattering bangs," "African hairstyles with bangs," and "curly hair with bangs" make the search longlist. There's even a search for the commitment-phobes among you: "clip on bangs" could give you a taste of fashionable fringe, without any morning-after-the-haircut blues.
