Cover Shots: Best Glossy First Impressions of 2008
No matter how media evolves, the magazine's slippery, sensual, glossy appeal still beguiles. Yet an excruciating editorial science (of sorts) goes into the making of a cover, designed to draw eyeballs at the old-fashioned newsstand.
The American Society of Magazine Editors will host its awards ceremony for the most eye-catching covers of 2008. Will a cartoon of contentious bedfellows Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama reaching for a 3 a.m. phone call win the News Cover category? Could Latina's gold-hued, come-hither photo of Jessica Alba beat out a mud-splattered George Clooney and contemplative Willie Nelson? Shall a strange blend of Iranian politics and a Larry Craig restroom stall reference steal the biggest title of all?
Check out all the covers at the ASME site.

Picture This
The holiday season is upon us, and while some folks are sweating it out at the mall, others are looking for festive photos online.
Nature lovers are dialing up "pictures of snowflakes" and "snow pictures." Martha Stewart wannabes are looking into "pictures of gingerbread houses." Jolly "frosty the snowman pictures" (+799%) lead the pack of desired holiday character images, followed by "grinch pictures" (+134%) and "santa claus cartoon pictures" (+57%). A deeper dive into the Grinch data shows that 22% of the queries on the Christmas crankypants are from ladies between 35-44 years old. So ugly he's cute?
Put down those shopping bags and take a gander at the top holiday "picture" searches from the past week…
Image is Everything
It's been two months since we last checked on top celeb image searches, and the men have a new leader. All hail Zac Efron! The teen heartthrob has vaulted from out of nowhere to the top of our list. His star turns in "Hairspray" and "High School Musical 2" have made him our most desirable man.
Daniel Radcliffe followed much the same trajectory. Our #2 guy wasn't on the list last time we looked, but the teen wizard of "Harry Potter" conjured his way back into the good graces of curious searchers. Other than that, there were a couple of minor shuffles and "Pirates" stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom walked the plank and fell from the top 10.
As for the ladies, it's more of the same. As much complaining as you do about the tired trainwrecks of celebdom, we're seeing the same familiar faces populating the list. The only notable chick to make her debut in the top 10 is "Hairspray" hottie Amanda Bynes. Here are the full lists...

Baby Picture Boom
Babies. Pictures. Two buzz tastes that taste great together. When the irresistible cuteness of babies meets the unquenchable desire for images on the Web, buzz is the outcome. Just this week, searches on "tiger woods baby pictures" jumped 819% as curious folks sought out pics of baby Sam Woods.
We decided to flip through the Search scrapbook to find the top 20 baby picture queries. What we found was a motley mix of nosy folks looking for the infant offspring of celebs and oddballs seeking out baby snaps of their favorite stars...
Image is Everything
Since we last checked top celeb image searches, we've seen a few minor shuffles. The dudes stayed stagnant with soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo the only one getting booted from the terrific ten. In his place, we welcome the dreamy Brad Pitt. Seems odd that Pitt wasn't already among the top 10, but the hunky hubby of Angelina finally took his rightful spot among the Web's most-sought-after men.
As for the ladies, sexy swimmer Amanda Beard coasted into the #7 spot thanks to a recent spread in "Playboy." Bodacious babes Jessica Biel and Vida Guerra put their curves to good use and earned spots among the top ten women. Ultra popular Pam Anderson dropped from our list, but we have a funny feeling she'll be back. You just can't keep a good woman down. Here are the lists...
