Nicole's Very Special Soundtrack

By Mike Krumboltz
Mon, June 30, 2008, 1:21 pm PDT

Giving birth is a miracle unlike any other. Alas, for the woman performing the miracle, it's also a bit painful.

Women in labor need all the comfort they can get, so it's no surprise that many expectant moms want to choose the music they'll hear in the delivery room. Think of it as a "birthing soundtrack." Nicole Kidman's selection of tunes recently hit the Web and caused a stir in the Buzz.

Nicole's musician husband, Keith Urban, will get plenty of airplay during her upcoming hospital stay. However, according to several articles in the Buzz, the country crooner won't be the most prominently played artist. That honor belongs to famed flautist James Galway.

The New York Daily News quotes a friend of Nicole's as saying Mr. Galway's melodies are often heard at her home. Searches on Mr. Galway are scant at the moment, but may hit a high note in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the Irish legend can only hope his greatest hits will keep his biggest fan relaxed in her hour of need. No pressure, Jimmy.

Buzz Week in Review

By Vera H-C Chan
Fri, May 09, 2008, 3:11 pm PDT

Ever get that sinking feeling, say, two football fields long? That pretty much encapsulates the week of news that was in Buzz.

Another Cyclone?
The tragedy of the Myanmar cyclone hit on many levels: its potential avoidability, its actual devastation, and rejected assistance. Days before the military junta's impending referendum, 120-mph winds tore open what critics called the country's despotic and ineffective governance. Any natural disaster these days also brings up global-warming issues, which USA Today pursued, although one scientist pointed out that removing "protective vegetation" is the bigger environmental mistake. The long-suffering country may have more to fear this monsoon season. Even in such horror, however, the citizens of Myanmar may see divine intervention for change.

Another Child?
An Arkansas woman who has already conceivably gone more than 11 years without seeing her feet is pregnant again. Michelle Duggar will determinedly push out child number 18 on New Year's Day. The Discovery Health cable network has returned to film the run-up to the Duggar family's latest addition. And Barack Obama thinks it's a big deal to pick up nine more superdelegates.

Another Tax Return?
Cindy McCain has gained in public scrutiny and Search curiosity, as her husband, John, prepares to represent his party in the presidential race. Her refusal to release her tax returns, which she files separately, has already added the odd "cindy mccain beer" query to the usual ones posed about her age, biography, and wedding. (The beer relates to her shares in a Phoenix beer distributorship.)

Also spiking in Buzz this week...
• Blogs continued to embrace an ESPN story of good "sportsgirlship" in the NCAA softball playoffs. Searchers followed up on one Sara Tucholsky (+109%), who tore a knee ligament before she could finish her first and only career home run. However, it was home run queen and opposing team member Mallory Holtman who got a 21,492% boost in searches for helping to carry Tucholsky around the bases, so she could savor her victory.

• Of all the breathless stories swirling around the union of Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, NY Mag's Daily Intel reassured rumormongers that the couple's "breakneck" courtship didn't dint Mariah's biz savvy. Carey required a prenup. Just like the McCains.

• "Harold and Kumar" aside, teens and marijuana can become lethal mix, especially when depression is added to the mix, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The Pregnant Man Grows Ever Larger in Buzz

By Molly McCall
Thu, April 03, 2008, 1:30 pm PDT

On Thursday, Oprah introduced Oregon resident Thomas Beatie to anyone who hadn't yet heard of him. Beatie, a transgender man who is legally male, is six months pregnant with his and his wife's child. La Winfrey called the expectant situation "a new definition of what diversity means for everybody."

And everybody, it seems, is interested. Over the past seven days, searches for "pregnant man" rose 26,879%. Demand for "thomas beatie" grew more than 3,000%. Interest in "oregon man pregnant" has swelled 461%.

As for the skeptics who typed "man claims he is pregnant" and "pregnant man?" into Search, we can answer: Mr. Beatie retained his female reproductive organs. Because he has a uterus, he can get pregnant and carry a baby to term.

In Buzz, some of the most popular articles from the past week focused on the bun in Beatie's oven. As we posted earlier, Boing Boing and Huffington Post were two of the first sources to surface with articles on the story. Since then, the Huffington Post scored another hit with an item revealing more photos of the fertile daddy.

LilSugar, Yahoo! News, and People.com have also polled well with Buzz readers. The People.com article, which offers an exclusive video clip from the Oprah appearance, was one of the most voted-on articles in Buzz after the show aired.

So has this childbearing event really redefined what diversity means for everybody? The tale certainly seems to have people thinking about gender issues. We've noted a surge in queries for "transgendered" and "transgender pregnancy." Lookups for "pregnant man" have flowed in from every state in the U.S. and every age group.

With the fruitful papa about to enter his third trimester, we may have three more months of this baby buzz. Enjoy it!

One Pregnant Man and One Belly of Buzz

By Molly McCall
Wed, March 26, 2008, 1:30 pm PDT

There's a man in Oregon who's eating for two. Thomas Beattie, a transgender male, lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, Nancy. When Beattie went through the process of becoming a man, he kept his female reproductive parts. Now, he's pregnant with the couple's baby—and Buzz is aglow with the news.

On Monday, a Boing Boing post on the story surfaced in Buzz. It quotes Beattie and offers a photo of him with what looks like an expectant (and hairy) belly. Today, The Huffington Post covered the fertile tale. The author, Verena von Pfetten, linked to other instances of male pregnancy. "Think this is strange?" she queried, "Think again." It turns out seahorses do it all the time.

Finally, ABC emerged with an article. The piece investigates the story, interviews Thomas Beattie's surprised neighbors, and confirms that, yes, Virginia, this is possible.

All this topsy turvy procreation has sparked the interest of searchers. Yesterday, we logged spikes in "pregnant man" and "oregon man pregnant." Frankly, that's enough for us. We don't need to see "man morning sickness" or "oregon man stretch marks," thank you for much. The baby is due in July. Congratultions, Thomas!

Highbrow Hottie

By Andrea Sandke
Sat, February 09, 2008, 3:45 am PST

A chorus of wolf whistles rang out in Search this week following the news that Russian-born opera star Anna Netrebko (+1200%) is expecting and engaged. Requests for "anna netrebko hot" hit a high note (+537%), along with "anna netrebko pictures" and "anna netrebko biography." Men 25-54 were especially inclined to introduce themselves to the sultry soprano, though we also registered a notable burst of lookups from teenage boys. Will these youngsters be developing a taste for opera anytime soon?
