Helen Mirren: Hottie

By Mike Krumboltz
Thu, July 17, 2008, 4:44 pm PDT

Throwing sand at the theory that says only the young and buoyant have the right to wear bikinis, 63-year-old Oscar winner Helen Mirren recently rocked a red two-piece and set off a wave of buzz.

Searches on "helen mirren bikini" and "helen mirren photos" both surged into the triple digits and several blogs within the Buzz paid tribute. The Huffington Post notes that it's difficult to believe this is the same actress who played the Queen of England. Meanwhile, a writer for Salon.com wonders if the smokin' photos of Dame Helen prove that it really is possible to get hotter with age.

Emmy's a Lady Too

Does the Emmy statuette carry more weight for an actress?

Television has long been a landing pad for talented women. Cybill Shepherd and Angela Lansbury revived their careers when they went detecting in the '80s and '90s with their respective series, "Moonlighting" and "Murder She Wrote." These days, Kyra Sedgewick ("The Closer") and Holly Hunter ("Saving Grace") talk even tougher on cable, possibly making TNT the rougher, tougher version of the Lifetime Channel.

As another round of actors and actresses put "Emmy nominee" on their resumé, Hollywood Reporter brings an eye-opening perspective from seven past contenders for Best Actress categories on what (fleeting) legitimacy a nomination can bring. The women also discuss the better availability of female roles on TV, which spurs a particularly rousing rant from Minnie Driver ("The Riches"), who hates "the idea of reaching a certain age and being put in this box that forces actresses to become these battle-axes who speak out against youth culture," and an eloquent philosophy waxed by Brooke Shields ("Lipstick Jungle") about fame being a "fascinating, precarious concept" that still "deterioriates your soul."

TV has regularly fed creative concepts to the movies for some time, but the recent box-office triumph of (Emmy award-winning) "Sex and the City" may underscore the argument for a female cinematic presence on mediums small and big. Later this month, "The X-Files 2" brings back the whip-smart, pragmatic FBI detective Dana Scully (played by Gillian Anderson), adding to a sparse field of heroines so far populated by surrogate moms (Tina Fey and Amy Poehler), a female assassin (Angelina Jolie) and a plant-hunting robot (voiced by Elissa Knight).

Besides Emmy contenders, recent interviews with favorite actresses include the Los Angeles Times' chat with "Battlestar Galactica" actress Rekha Sharma, among the rare breed of minority actresses in sci-fi; who might sub for Search favorite Mary Lynn Rajskub as she's too pregnant for another season of "24," and the (limited) return of Jorja Fox in "CSI." Statuette or not, the ladies deserve a little attention for proving that their expiration date is way after 30.

Hollywood Strike Song-and-Dance

By Vera H-C Chan
Thu, June 26, 2008, 12:52 pm PDT

A Hollywood writer goes on strike, and summer television overflows with the stench of reality TV. Who knows then what horrors await should the Screen Actors Guild strike in July.

The New York Times reports that while the writers' strike actually helped some TV shows get ahead, major film projects may be endangered. We can imagine: Would director Ridley Scott be forced to defy Hollywood tradition and hire an actual Englishman to play Robin Hood for his film "Nottingham"? Will all comic-book ensemble movies end once and for all if the Justice League project dies? The upside: A delay could help knock Judd Apatow off the Farrelly and Wachowski brothers' creative downward spiral.

Slate doesn't believe any walkoffs will happen, but in the event they do, Tinseltown talent could take up a summer project: Follow the Weinsteins down the Great White Way. The movie producers plan to make Broadway shows, including "Finding Neverland," "Shakespeare in Love," and "Chocolat." Check off-Broadway for Michael Myers for his chainsaw serenade in "Phantom of the Opera: Halloween Special."

Searchers Heart Jena Malone

By Molly McCall
Mon, April 07, 2008, 1:25 pm PDT

Teen horror flick "The Ruins" opened this weekend, and generally played true to its name. It placed a disastrous fifth at the box office and earned a lousy C+ rating from Yahoo! users. By Sunday, lookups for the movie had plunged 25%.

However, the romp among ancient Mexican remains did prove a boon to one of its cast members. Of the four beautiful young things to shriek and vamp in the film, actress Jena Malone emerged with a leading lady's amount of buzz. Just yesterday, searches for her name spiked 10,947%. Compare that to the Search performance of her co-stars: Shawn Ashmore (+36%), Jonathan Tucker (+24%), and poor Laura Ramsey (-10%).

Besides Jena's name, searchers demanded her filmography, her pictures, and—the ultimate Search smack of approval—images of her kissing. In Buzz, a profile of the "unflappable" actress from The New York Daily News waxed on about her "winning streak," her "edgy" films, and her "new sense of self." And just like that, a new starlet emerges from the ruins.

What's Going On With Bernadette Peters?

By Molly McCall
Tue, April 01, 2008, 3:03 pm PDT

No, really, what's going on? Yesterday, searches for Bernadette Peters surged 10,587%. Demand for her name kept the big-voiced wonder at the top of the hourly searches most of the day. By the end of the 24-hour period, she'd racked up enough buzz to break into Monday's top 10 fastest moving queries.

We ticked through the most recent news stories about La Peters, and all of them left us wanting. Could it have been her March 27 appearance as a guest host on "Regis"? Unlikely. What about her impending arrival in the bustling metropolis of Cleveland? Uh, no.

No less an expert than Kermit the Frog once labeled the curly-haired crooner "one of the all-time, multi-talented, beautiful ladies of the world." And, hey, we agree. But we're still baffled as to why searchers went ga-ga for her yesterday. If you have an idea, relieve us of this dilemma and post a note.

Now, on to today's top hourly searches: What's the story with Teri Garr?
