Ready for the Madness?

By Erik Gunther

It's that time of year when brackets and bubbles fast break their way to the forefront of sports fans' minds. Yes, it's March, and we're ready for March Madness (+147%). Searches on "ncaa basketball" slammed the Buzz with a 42% increase and promises to rise as we head into all-important Selection Sunday.

We saw a bevy of spikes after a busy weekend in college basketball. Here are a few that filled our net...

"Bracketology" lends an almost scientific air to the process of nerdy hoops fans predicting the seeds of the 64 teams that will make up the NCAA Tournament. The new term gets some play, but old standby "rpi," short for rating percentage index, is always hot around tournament time. Searches on "college basketball rpi" (+25%) and "rpi rankings" (+20%) bounced up over the last week. We'll continue to follow the bouncing ball of buzz as the most exciting time of year in college sports tips off.

Madness Encircles Buzz

Interest in the NCAA Basketball Tournament just continues to grow, year over year. Without the Web and your insatiable thirst for college hoops, we would likely be in the dark ages of bracketology, simply guessing at what would take place when brackets were announced. Even the once-staid boardroom boredom of "selection sunday" (+472%) has become a capital 'E' Event on the sporting calendar.

With Sunday's enormous hoops hoopla and the blossom of millions of office pools, we were inundated with college basketball search spikes. Here's a sampling of the madness...

Feeling the Draft

By Erik Gunther

The annual crapshoot of overly hyped hoopsters known as the NBA Draft descended onto the Buzz this week. Searches on the Draft jumped 189% and into our top three sports searches. With the teams in stealth mode as the Draft blew in, searches on "nba draft rumors" and "nba rumors" also crept up in the Buzz.

Teams dispensed with the whispers and showed their hands last night when it was time to pick. The moves made by the Milwaukee Bucks (+378%), Boston Celtics (+253%), and Chicago Bulls (+240%) led to large increases in Search. The Bucks boost wasn't due to a grand Draft strategy—but because the team unveiled a new logo and color scheme.

As for this year's crop of hoops gods, the man with the 'stache shall lead them. Searches on new Bobcat and facial-hair guru Adam Morrison doubled the rest of his fellow draftees, including number one pick Andrea Bargnani. Other new pros making their presence felt in Buzz included Tyrus Thomas (+195%), Rudy Gay (+188%), and J.J. Redick (+75%).

Disheartened New York Knicks fans barely cared enough to search, with queries on the woebegone franchise up only 59%. Either that or they're already looking ahead to 2007 and probable number one pick Greg Oden, who soared 212% as he prepares to star for Ohio State this fall. Wait 'til next year, indeed...

Nothing But Net

At its best, the NBA (+38%) is a thrilling and fast-paced dunk-a-thon. At its worst, it's a boring-as-Bill Walton free-throw contest. But whether you're a league lover or hater, you can't deny the NBA's strength in Search. With the season just getting started, the Buzz is bouncing on teams, players, and NBA fantasy leagues.

It's a little early to declare any team a winner in Search, especially since the NBA's season is as long as a Siberian winter. But for now, it appears the always dramatic Los Angeles Lakers are the team to beat in the Buzz. Searches on the Kobe and Phil Show are up 77% this month and are more than double those on the defending champions, the San Antonio Spurs. Among players, the heavily inked Allen Iverson draws the most searches, though amazingly, fans still haven't forgotten about Michael Jordan. The retiree is barely behind Iverson, proving he's still a force to be reckoned with in the Buzz. It's your world, guys -- we're just searching on it.

Switching gears from overpaid icons to wannabe GMs, searches on NBA fantasy leagues are also making a fast break in the Buzz. While not nearly as popular a pastime as fantasy football, the number-crunching hobby is nevertheless up 638%. Those looking for a leg up on their rivals are likely pushing "nba injuries" and "nba rumors" into the frontcourt (you can never have too much information), and gamers who dig the pixilated NBA have given a beautifully timed Search alley-oop to video games NBA Live 06 and NBA 2K6. Game on, fellas.
